SUMMARY:Büchel course with sound hike in the upper Toggenburg (with Balthasar Streiff)
DESCRIPTION:The Büchel is considered the little brother of the alphorn. Technically more demanding to play\, its sound exudes a fascinating roughness. Melodically\, we take a slightly different approach to the alphorn: the Büchel can be played in several voices\, but it is also perfectly suited as a call and communication instrument in a simple sense\, even without notes. In addition to the correct embouchure technique\, we learn to play traditional and self-invented Büchelgsätzli in the middle of nature. The course is aimed at people with intermediate and advanced experience on brass instruments or Büchel/Alphorn. If you have a Büchel\, please bring it with you (no matter which tuning). \nOn Sunday\, when the weather is fine\, we explore the mountain landscape of Toggenburg. \nSure-footedness and a good level of fitness are required for the course.  \nPlease bring the following for the Büchel hiking day:\n– Comfortable backpack\n– Mountain boots (ankle-high shoes with a good profile)\n– Comfortable hiking clothing\n– Rain and sun protection\n– warm sweater or fiber fur\n– light gloves and hat\n– Drinking bottle or thermos flask (at least 1 liter)\n– Lunch and snacks\n– any personal medication

DESCRIPTION:Get to know the alphorn in its natural habitat. From Zurich I will take you to the most beautiful places in the Alps and show you how to play the alphorn. In a short time you will learn the basics of alphorn blowing – no previous musical knowledge is required. Listen to your breath turn into good vibes and the rocks begin to sing. It’s mighty fun and opens your ears to the soundscape of the mountains! Unlike other alphorn courses\, you will discover the alphorn not in a musty practice room but where it belongs. For the day we provide an alphorn for all participants. \nBannalp is a hidden gem and the perfect destination for an alphorn day. After a one-hour drive to Oberrickenback\, a gondola lift takes us to the Chrützhütte at 1718 meters above sea level. We can linger there\, play at Bannsee or hike to the spectacular Alp Oberfeld (45 minutes from Bannsee\, 250 meters high)\, famous for its echo. You can bring your lunch with you or take it in one of the restaurants in the area. Note: Bannalp is also suitable for two-day trips with an overnight stay at the Chrützhütte; couples and small families can also book a room at Alp Oberfeld. Price includes gondola ticket.

DESCRIPTION:Get to know the alphorn in its natural habitat. From Zurich I will take you to the most beautiful places in the Alps and show you how to play the alphorn. In a short time you will learn the basics of alphorn blowing – no previous musical knowledge is required. Listen to your breath turn into good vibes and the rocks begin to sing. It’s mighty fun and opens your ears to the soundscape of the mountains! Unlike other alphorn courses\, you will discover the alphorn not in a musty practice room but where it belongs. For the day we provide an alphorn for all participants. \nThe journey to Oberblegisee is part of the adventure: first a one-hour ride by minibus to Luchsingen\, then a breezy gondola ride to Brunnenberg and finally a steep climb on foot (400 meters in altitude). But the spectacular scenery at this quiet mountain lake at 1420 m.a.s.l. compensates us for the exertions. The steep rock faces sing a sweet echo that makes your first contact with the alphorn an unforgettable experience. For the lunch break we walk to the cozy Bächibeizli – the tenant also plays the alphorn\, but will probably not find time to accompany us. Possibility to spend the night on the Bösbächi Alp (near the Bächibeizli) and watch the alpine dairyman making cheese in the morning.

The mountain lake and the echo amidst the steep rock faces create an incomparable alphorn experience. One of the coldest places in Switzerland in winter\, a visit is also refreshing in summer. After a one-hour drive to Muotathal\, a cable car takes us to 1852 meters above sea level. We can now play the alphorn at one of the echo points or during an entertaining walk around the Glattalpsee. For lunch\, a cozy mountain restaurant is a good choice; alternatively\, we bring the food ourselves. \nAlphorn rental and mountain railroad included in the price.

In addition\, instrument-specific features are addressed and new literature and impulses for practicing at home are provided. \nExcursions and concerts in the southern Black Forest region\, where the repertoire is presented\, round off the program. \n\n\nThe online seminar series The Mountain Calls with Bertold Schick is a condensed version and digital supplement to the educational week of the same name for alphorn players at the BDB Academy. Each workshop focuses on an alphorn composition written by Bertold Schick. Bertold Schick presents exercises on the basics of alphorn playing and introduces the new composition on this basis. Participants expand and consolidate their skills in the areas of playing methodology\, breathing\, embouchure\, tone formation and can ask questions in the chat. DESCRIPTION:Course for very advanced students as part of the Arosa Music Course Weeks.\nLukas Briggen takes over from Balthasar Streiff in 2024. Information based on previous year\, update to follow.\nFor many musicians\, the alphorn has the significance of a second instrument. The pure tuning and the relative lack of interesting scores have so far limited professionalization. But times are changing: the trend towards a radical expansion of the use of the alphorn has begun. The course takes this fact into account by rehearsing various challenging pieces.\nThe prerequisite for the course is that you already play the alphorn or a brass instrument at a high\, semi-professional or professional level. This is how we work in the technical\nThe alphorn is a musical instrument in which the individual skills are transferred to the sound and playing culture of the alphorn. This then leads to perfecting the group playing in terms of sound\, dynamics and intonation.\n\nPlaying long and high with great ease is on the wish list of most wind players. We will therefore focus on clarinet blowing\, a technique that has lost importance with the introduction of valves\, but which is of great significance for the alphorn. DESCRIPTION:You will immerse yourself in the traditional craft of instrument making and make your own Bernatone alphorn. You will also learn exciting facts about the history and materials of alphorn making. The parts\, some of which are roughly prefabricated\, are said\, sanded and straightened by hand to form a three-meter-long musical instrument in the basic pitch of F sharp. You will also visit the Bernatone production facility in Habkern during a joint excursion and enjoy an exclusive insight into the active alphorn tradition. \n

DESCRIPTION:The educational week The mountain calls for alphorn players focuses on making music together in an alphorn ensemble three times a year. For five days\, a repertoire is worked on and the basics of alphorn playing – breathing\, embouchure\, tone formation and intonation – are refreshed and deepened using pieces of different styles. In addition\, instrument-specific features are addressed and new literature and impulses for practicing at home are provided. \nExcursions and concerts in the southern Black Forest region\, where the repertoire is presented\, round off the program. \n\n\nThe online seminar series The Mountain Calls with Bertold Schick is a condensed version and digital supplement to the educational week of the same name for alphorn players at the BDB Academy. Each workshop focuses on an alphorn composition written by Bertold Schick. Bertold Schick presents exercises on the basics of alphorn playing and introduces the new composition on this basis. Participants expand and consolidate their skills in the areas of playing methodology\, breathing\, embouchure\, tone formation and can ask questions in the chat.
